Manager, Technical Accounting
Job Grade
The Technical Accounting Manager is a grade 8.
Responsibilities
- Assists in determining and documenting the Company’s accounting policies and position on relevant transactions.
- Review of non-recurring journal entries to determine appropriate classification.
- Must have good technical research skills.
- Must be able to work collaboratively with the operational accounting team and business functions.
- Provide periodic technical accounting trainings to the members of the Accounting organization.
- Coordinate with external audit (Ernst & Young) on technical accounting issues.
- This position will initially be an individual contributor but we expect this person to build a highly functioning, distributed team over time.
- Provide support to the accounting close process, including preparation of US GAAP financial statements.
Requirements
- Proven work experience in a Technical Accounting role.
- Fair knowledge of SEC filing requirements, experience highly preferred.
- Must have at least three years of work experience in a Big 4 CPA firm.
- Must have knowledge of US GAAP.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP principles and financial statements.
- Proficient with google sheets.
- Revenue recognition, namely 606, experience highly preferred.
- Detail-oriented, self-directed and able to effectively complete tasks with minimal supervision

Director, Technical Accounting
Job Grade
The Director, Technical Accounting is a grade 10.
Responsibilities
All of the above responsibilities, plus
- Drives the positions GitLab has taken on revenue for ASC 606, commission capitalization and amortization, allocation of hosting costs, ProServe revenue, assists in the related party questionnaire, and other positions on US GAAP and SEC reporting documentation.
- Is the subject matter expert on SEC reporting, positions on new Accounting pronouncements, and other relevant technical accounting items.
- Manages a team of Technical Accounting Managers.
- Works with the Finance and Accounting teams on resolutions of issues related to revenue, expenses, balance sheet, and Audit Committee reports.
- Provides analysis and consultation of technical accounting to Financial leadership.
Requirements
All of the above requirements, plus
- Proven leadership of Technical Accounting team (hire, develop, coach, mentor, engage)
- Strong knowledge of SEC filing requirements, experience highly preferred.
Performance Indicators
- Deals reviewed for revenue recognition
- Issue opened for all key technical accounting matters

- Technical accounting queries disposed of

Senior Director, Technical Accounting
Job Grade
The Senior Director, Technical Accounting is a grade 11.
Responsibilities
- Be the trusted advisor to the PAO and CFO on all complex accounting matters and lead strategic accounting initiatives
- Provide global oversight of technical accounting policies and proactively assess the impact of new U.S. GAAP accounting standards and SEC regulations
- Provide strategic direction to the technical accounting team, including recruiting, retaining, and developing top talent
- Partner with leadership, team members and other stakeholders across GitLab to address technical accounting matters
- Establish themselves as a key business partner and “go-to” resource to provide technical accounting guidance to senior management and others
- Document analysis of complex accounting matters and communicate results succinctly for non-accountants to understand
- Support GitLab’s quarterly and annual SEC filings and partner with the SEC Reporting team during the quarterly reporting cycle
- Incorporate and maintain SOX controls within the Technical Accounting function
- Coordinate with the accounting team/advisors/external valuation firms/founders of targets for all financial reporting related matters for asset and business acquisitions
- Draft responses to SEC comments on the financial statements
Requirements
- CPA or CPA equivalent with 12+ years of professional experience preferably with a large public accounting firm or a public company in the technology sector
- Experience of working on IPOs and interacting with the SEC staff
- Thorough knowledge of US GAAP, strong technical writing skills and experience in the implementation and handling of complex U.S. GAAP accounting matters with proven ability to research and clearly articulate and document complex technical accounting issues
- Strong problem solving skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Effective communication skills, including an ability to listen to the needs of the business units, research and comprehend complex matters, articulate issues in a clear and simplified manner, and present findings and recommendations in both oral and written presentations
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to build and maintain stakeholder relationships at all levels
- Ability to think strategically and support business objectives while effectively balancing risk/reward trade-offs
- Previous experience in a remote work environment would be an added advantage
- Ability to use GitLab
